The Pitch Woman
Artist’s Statement
The Seattle Children’s Theatre premiered the play “The Remember” in 1994. Written by Steven Dietz, it tells the true story of a young Squaxin Indian girl, who was forcibly taken from her home and placed in an American government-run school in 1911. The Pitch Woman was one of the characters in the play I had designed costumes for. During a rehearsal break, a Native elder shared the story of the Pitch Woman with some of the younger cast members. I happened to have listened in on the story, and it has since stuck in my mind.
I have decided that this is an opportune time to recount “The Pitch Woman,” as the Trump administration has been busy incarcerating thousands of migrant children in detention camps. America does have a history of ripping children away from their families, and the message in “The Pitch Woman” is as relevant decades ago as it is now.
The version I have written is not identical to the original one, as it has been years since I have last heard it, and for my “book’s” sake I have made changes to allow for more formal written narration. I hope I have not butchered this story, and that my adaptation has not insulted Native cultures by my lack of knowledge in the area. I have tried my best to be faithful to the spirit of it, and I hope that its core message will resonate with you as much as it has for me.
