La Bete

by David Hirson

Seattle Group Theatre

It would be too convenient to strictly present La Bete as a 17th Century comedy of manners. Its examination of what constitutes "true" art suggests more of a postmodern theme. With the vulgar street performer Valere representing one standard and the rigid "professional" playwright Elomire representing the other, the battle between "high" and "low" art is being played out.

Costume designs for this production combine the silhouette of the 17th Century with the contemporary. Instead of breeches, one finds modern suit trousers. Instead of lace and ribbon headdresses, one finds hair braided in architectural styles. Whenever the extreme is called for, such as Valere's souffle hairstyle or Prince Conti's 50 feet cape, the extreme is delivered! Much inspiration is taken from today's couture fashion, especially with designs that beg the question: "Is this rich beauty, or is this expensive ugliness?”
