Paul Louey
Biography
Paul Louey is a costume designer, social worker, educator, and printmaker all rolled into one! As a costume designer in the United States, his identity as an Asian American brought him many opportunities to design for productions that focused on issues of human rights. Race and gender-related forms of oppression were often the themes he worked on. His subsequent career change into the field of social work was a direct result of such prior experience, and his work on HIV/AIDS prevention, domestic violence and rape, as well as aging and mental health services, paved his way towards completion of his Master of Social Work degree at the University of Washington.
Inspired by a course in International Social Work, Paul returned to his birthplace of Hong Kong in 2001 to commence his post MSW degree work. In the two decades spent in Hong Kong, half of Paul’s work experience was in HIV/AIDS and cancer services, while the remaining was in language and visual arts instruction for elementary students. Paul’s passion for printmaking began in 2018, and over the years, non-toxic printmaking has been his primary focus. Mokuhanga, mezzotint, and monotype are Paul’s preferred methods. In September 2022, Paul returned to his home in the Pacific Northwest to continue his pursuit of social justice and artistic ideals.
The artwork included in this website can therefore be observed in such context. It is where the artist meets the educator and the social worker.
